A Simple Guide on Will Writing to Get You Started

Making a will is one of the most important things you’ll ever need to do. In event of your passing, your assets will not be “automatically” passed down to your loved ones.

Hence, it is important to ensure your family and loved ones will get what is rightfully theirs.

But where should you start? Here’s a simple guide on Will writing to get you started.

#1 List down your assets

Start off by listing down your assets.

That might include details of bank accounts, properties, businesses, vehicles, jewellery, antiques or other valuables and investments such as shares.

You should also note if these assets are under your name or jointly with a spouse or family member.

#2 Who are the beneficiaries?

For most people, this would normally be your immediate family members- spouse, children, parents etc., but it may not necessarily be so depending on your circumstances.

You are free to choose who or which entity you would like to leave your assets to. List them down so you’ll have an idea on how to distribute your assets.

#3 Appoint Executor(s)

Next, think about who you will name as an Executor in your will.

You can appoint up to 4 Executors in case an Executor dies or is unwilling to act.

It’s important that you discuss this with the person you have chosen to ensure that they are willing to take up the responsibility to do so.

You can also appoint a corporation such as Rockwills instead of an individual.

#4 Signed with 2 witnesses & kept safely

Finally, in order for your will to be valid, the will must be signed in the presence of two witnesses, who must also sign it.

Keep in mind that the two witnesses cannot be beneficiaries (or spouses of beneficiaries).

Once done, keep it somewhere safe- but not hidden.

You’ll want your beneficiaries to be able to locate it once you have passed on.

There are also safe Will custody centres such as Rockwills Custody Centre that you may want to keep your Will at.

Although creating a Will might seem easy at a glance, engaging a professional Will writing corporation like Rockwills will ensure that your Will is valid and workable. It’ll give you a peace of mind when the time comes in ensuring that there are no loose ends and that your loved ones will be well taken care of.
